D-Link's DWM-312W is a mobile router, a device to which other devices are connected (eg computer, mobile, TV) wirelessly, and to which it shares access to the Internet. Access to the Internet is obtained through the modem that is integrated and uses the mobile telephony network with the installation of a SIM card. The SIM card must have an active data plan connection.
It connects to the 4G network, which offers significantly higher speeds than 3G. In order for the device to work at this speed, there must be corresponding coverage from the mobile network in the area where we are.
It is Wi‑Fi generation 4, an older generation that is recommended for use with few devices and for applications that do not require high speeds. It emits a signal at two frequencies, 2.4 & 5GHz. It offers higher speeds than single band and connection of more devices. The 2.4Ghz frequency is the most widespread and has a long range. 5Ghz provides faster speed than 2.4Ghz but is more sensitive to obstacles (eg walls) that reduce its range. This difference and its more limited use helps to have less interference from other networks.
The device has the ability to configure a VPN (Virtual Private Network) so that traffic from all devices on our network passes through it. The VPN acts as an intermediary between us and the rest of the internet, allowing us to give the impression that we are geographically located in another country and the pages we visit see the VPN address as a visitor and not ours. This provides us with anonymity and access to geo-restricted content. VPN services are usually paid with a subscription.
